Challenges in cultivating microorganisms have limited the phylogenetic diversity of currently available microbial genomes. This is being addressed by advances in sequencing throughput and computational techniques that allow for the cultivation-independent recovery of genomes from metagenomes.

Why do bats live so much longer than other small, high energy mammals?

Attended the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution conference where I not only had the opportunity to witness a large colony of bats leave their roosting site to go about their nightly feeding, but also learned a lot about the research being done to investigate their fascinating and unexpected longevity.
